VICE recently spoke with women whose lives were turned upside down by Andrew Tate, who used apps like Tinder to exploit girls as young as 16 for his webcam sex business. Lisa is one of them, and she recalls her brush with Tate as an example of how easy it can be to get taken advantage of on the app.

While the sex-oriented history of Tinder persists in its rough-around-the-edges, anything-goes vibe, there are ways to minimize the risk of running into a predator. For starters, don’t swipe right on everyone. Keep it to the people who are genuinely interested in you, and make sure your profile includes clear photos of you (not photoshopped or blurred).

Also, don’t worry too much about how many “Super Likes” you receive. It isn’t a reliable indicator of attractiveness in the real world. And lastly, know that wealth in the Tinder economy is unequal: Attractive guys have more “wealth” in the app’s economy—in other words, they get more “likes”—than unattractive guys do. (That’s not really a surprise.) But it’s worth examining this inequality to see if it’s getting worse or better.
