Being a camgirl sounds glamorous. But there’s a lot of work that goes into it that people don’t always realize. In this week’s episode of the LGBTQ&A podcast, Isa Mazzei—author of the new memoir Camgirl—talks about how being a cam girl was one of the hardest jobs she’s ever had and why it was so transformative for her.
The cam girl preys on her clients’ sympathy and assures them that she is unique, that she shares a special bond with them, that they are the only ones who understand her. Eventually she convinces them to share their credit card number or send her money. She calls this finding a “whale,” and it’s how most of the money is made on a cam site. The rest comes from microtransactions in video games.
