Isa Mazzei, author of the memoir Camgirl Talks about I Know You Don’t Want Anything Else talks to Jeffrey Masters for this week’s LGBTQ&A podcast about her experiences as a cam girl. She explains that the job was more difficult than most people realise, and a lot of work went into making it look effortless. She had to come up with new show ideas regularly, and also to engage with viewers in ways that weren’t strictly sexual. This meant answering private messages, checking in after a viewer’s job interview or birthday, and being a de facto therapist.
The reason men keep coming back for more is that they’re addicted to the dopamine hit of seeing the woman naked and then being rewarded by her responding to them personally. Cam sites make most of their money from a small minority of ‘whale’ users who spend lots of tokens, just like casinos and video game microtransations.
The women who do the job have a skill for talking to customers, making them feel consoled and understood, and then convincing them to share their credit card details or send her money.
