In our capitalist society, female beauty has a monetary value that’s increasingly being monetised via webcam. For camgirls, that’s good news. The work they do, however, is a lot more difficult than people think. Isa Mazzei’s memoir Camgirl (out today) is a candid conversation-starter about the year and a half she spent making a living as a live-streaming porn model. She joined us on this week’s episode of LGBTQ&A, the podcast that documents modern queer and trans history, to talk about the work she put into her shows, how she reshaped her views about consent in sexual relationships, and what she learned from working as a camgirl.
Camgirl also delves into her relationship with a man that she calls “my dick guy.” She says the fact that he has “all her dicks” on tape doesn’t bother her. She thinks that it’s a testament to the trust she has built with her audience. And that she has no problems with him chatting with other men who call themselves her dick friends.
Camgirl is a refreshing read about taboo topics ensconced within breezy honesty and whip-smart humor. We think it’s essential reading, especially for those who might avoid the subject of pornography like the plague. It takes a little time to get comfortable with the subject matter but the book is so worth it. It’s an honest look into the life of a woman who lives for the pleasure she gets from her online audience.
