In her new memoir, Camgirl, Mazzei opens up about her year-and-a-half in the sex industry. The memoir might be a little too frank for some, but it’s also refreshing to read about taboo topics ensconced in breezy honesty and whip-smart humor.
Some of her stories are quite disturbing, but many are hysterical and empowering. She talks about being an object of desire for men who buy her time, and how she’s convinced them she’s the only woman they’ll ever find that understands their fetishes and needs.
It’s not uncommon for men to become regulars with a cam girl, and some of them start to feel like they know her on a personal level. But that doesn’t mean they can’t be used as a means to extort money or send her pornographic videos of their own.
It’s no surprise that people are still fascinated by the sex work industry and its workers, especially with the popularity of Netflix’s hit psychological thriller, CAM. The film, starring Madeline Brewer as a cam girl who faces off with a digital copy of herself, is based on Mazzei’s own experiences as a sex worker.
