In our capitalistic society, female beauty has been monetised. Men get dopamine hits from buying her time & attention. Camsites profit off of these addicts, just as gaming companies do with microtransactions. But it’s one thing for cam girls to tolerate abusive and injurious talk when they exist in a delimited commercial space; it’s another for women outside of that space to have to endure similar speech in their daily lives.
In her memoir, Camgirl, Isa Mazzei chronicles her post-college search for identity that led to stripping, masturbating and playing games on camera for money. It’s not just a “yaaas queen” tale of female empowerment, but a nuanced look at the unshakeable grip of past trauma. Camgirl is out now, and I highly recommend it.
