Have Mercy is the debut solo single from American singer Chloe Bailey, best known as a member of the R&B sister duo Chloe x Halle. It was released on September 10, 2021, by RCA Records following the release of a snippet on TikTok. The song features production from Murda Beatz, with lyrics written by Chloe, Joseph L’etranger, and Nija Charles.
It’s not the most inventive record, but it’s a banger that blends smart wordplay with a slinky California beat. It’s the perfect track to get ready to head out for a night on the town.
It’s the kind of thing that might have a cult following, but without other emcees to offset and contrast his bassy timbre and plodding delivery, Lord Have Mercy’s monodimensional approach becomes monotonous very quickly. He does seem to be on the right track though, and it’s worth seeing how his skills evolve over the course of this album. There are moments of joining-the-dots throughout that will comfort fans of his past work, especially if you were a fan of Smooth/Trigga or Flipmode Squad, and it might help to overlook some of the weaker tracks on the record. One such example is third track I Don’t Wanna Think of You, which feels like an early Simple Plan anthem without bringing much new to the table.
