We’ve heard about women stripping, masturbating and playing games on camera for money — but Isa Mazzei takes it to a whole other level in her frank memoir Camgirl. It takes some time to acclimate, but once you do it’s refreshing to see taboo topics discussed with breezy honesty and self-awareness.
Camgirl describes a year and a half spent making a living by live-streaming herself on a porn site via webcam. For Mazzei, it was just another job – one that paid well, but ultimately didn’t fit with her ambition to find her identity. She bounced between a library clerk, an art studio assistant, a web designer, an English teacher and even a nanny – trying everything she could think of until she finally stumbled upon her calling.
Now a full-time writer and filmmaker, Mazzei’s latest project is a psychological thriller film called CAM, which stars Madeline Brewer as an online sex worker whose account is stolen by a duplicate of herself. She hopes that by creating art where consumers empathize with sex workers, people will understand the reality of working in this unregulated industry. We asked her to talk about her experience and her new book Camgirl, out today.
